Working Group for Abstract Painters

You are already making work.

Some paintings come together. Others do not.
Often there is a gap between what you are making and the work beginning to emerge.

This is part of the process.

Strong paintings develop over time through attention, consistency, and a willingness to look closely at the work.

This is a working group for painters engaged in abstraction. The focus is sustained critique, ongoing revision, and the long development of each artist’s work over time.

The group is designed to help painters remain engaged with the work long enough and clearly enough for more resolved work to emerge.

Limited to ten artists.
Meets twice monthly over seven months.

What this is

It is a working group for painters working in abstraction who already have a studio practice and want to continue developing their work through sustained critique, revision, and discussion over time.

Who it’s for

Painters working consistently in abstraction who want sustained critique and deeper engagement with their work over time.

Artists willing to remain with difficult or unresolved work rather than forcing premature resolution.

There are strong moments in your work, but you don’t always know how to build on them or bring a painting fully together.

You have an existing studio practice and are willing to engage directly with critique.

Who it’s not for

This is not for beginners or those looking for step-by-step instruction.

It is not for painters who are not actively working or who are not interested in sustained critique, revision, or ongoing engagement with unresolved work.

Structure

Meets every two weeks on Wednesdays, 6–8pm EST.
Sessions are held online via Zoom.

Each session is centered on critique and the development of your work over time.

Seven months, with short breaks built into the schedule.
Next group begins November 2026.

Tuition: $1400.

Payment plans are available.
Because of the size and structure of the group, refunds are not offered once the program begins.

My role

I offer direct critique, close observation, and ongoing dialogue around the work over time.

Together we look at what the painting is doing structurally and visually, where it still holds potential, and where it may be resisting resolution.

The goal is not to move the work toward a particular style or outcome, but to remain engaged long enough for stronger and more resolved paintings to emerge.

Application

Participation is by application.

This is a small group. Not all applicants will be a fit.
